Something amazing happening, on May 8, 2010, the timeless queen of comedy Ms. Betty White hosted SNL. But why is this so amazing, especially since Ms. White is a celebrity and SNL a comedy show?
It’s amazing because over 500,000 Facebook fans made it happen.
This successful Facebook campaign, called “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!”was created by someone who must adore Ms. Betty White. Their mission was simple and generous, to honor the very popular 88 year old entertainer and animal rights activist and, see her host SNL. And to top it off, the show also featured a reunion of SNL’s funny women Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch. Priceless.
That show was a huge success, being highest rated overnight in 18 months. And, bringing Betty White to SNL because of Facebook somehow lessened the divide of the generations and also showcased the power of social media.
Now being a marketer, a few questions come to mind like, was this Facebook page created by:
1. A true Betty White fan?
2. Someone inside SNL to boost ratings?
3. Betty’s business manager?
4. Betty herself, checking off an item on her bucket list?
Whether a brilliant marketing plan or a brilliant happening, either way, Betty White was wonderful, as was the reunion cast, and that show was hilariously funny! Thank you Facebook and SNL.
